German credit card fraud jumps 17%

Germany’s retailers are being warned to remain vigilant about credit card security, after fraud incidents increased by a fifth (17%) in the year to September 2014.

The figures have raised eyebrows as the number of total card purchases grew by just 5% during the same period.

Worringly, the number of successful fraudulent transaction attempts rose by 30%, with online purchases and cross-border card payments comprising the majority of security breaches.

The travel industry was worst affected, with tour operators and agencies accounting for more than 16% of fraud attacks, followed by airlines and hospitality venues.
